Check the BIS Hallmark (Best Method)
Look for the BIS triangle logo and the fineness number stamped on the jewellery. 916 = 22K (91.6% pure), 999 = 24K, 750 = 18K. Verify the 6-digit HUID code on the BIS Care app.
Accuracy: 100% — this is the only government-certified method.
Magnet Test
Pure gold is not magnetic. Hold a strong magnet near the jewellery. If it is attracted to the magnet, it is likely not pure gold (it may contain iron or nickel). Note: gold can still have non-magnetic impurities — this test is a screening tool only.
Accuracy: ~70% — catches obvious fakes but not sophisticated alloys.
Density Test
Pure gold has a very high density (19.3 g/cm³). Weigh the item, then measure its volume by water displacement. Density = weight ÷ volume. 22K gold should have a density of ~17.5 g/cm³.
Accuracy: ~85% — good for larger items; difficult for small pieces.
Acid Test
A jeweller rubs the gold on a black touchstone, then applies nitric acid of a known concentration. The reaction (or lack of it) indicates purity. 22K gold does not react to 22K acid.
Accuracy: ~95% — professional method, commonly used by jewellers.
XRF Machine Test
An X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser is a non-destructive machine test that gives precise purity readings in seconds. Many hallmarking centres and reputable jewellers have this machine.
Accuracy: ~99% — the gold standard for precision.
The Safest Way to Buy Gold
Always buy hallmarked gold from a BIS-registered jeweller. Check the HUID on the BIS Care mobile app before completing your purchase. For large purchases, ask for an XRF test or a hallmarking certificate.
